Artist biography:
Born in Hennebont (Morbihan) where his grand father was the mayor, Gustave le Sénéchal de Kerdréoret studied in Paris at the Henri IV college under Jules Noël. He became a sailor and made many voyages before being injured during the exploration of Mexico in 1862. As a captain for the Transatlantic Company he had the opportunity to sketch and gather material for his painting,

He started to exhibit at the Paris Salon in 1869, where he gained numerous awards, including honourable medal in 1881, a third class medal in 1883 and a second class medal in 1888. During the 1880’s and 1900’s he won medals at the Exhibitions Universelles and he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1900. In order to improve his technique, he took painting lessons with Pierre-Auguste Cot from 1871. He became a very close friend of Antoine Vollon in the 1880’s. Vollon gave him artistic advice and de Kerdréoret frequently visited him at his house in Mers-les Bains.
