Artist biography:

Ron Charles Mitchell specializes in painting classic yachts in modern regattas. He works from his own sketches and photographs taken on the water during the actual event, therefore all of his paintings represent an actual moment during a specific race. Ron was encouraged to paint by his uncle James a gifted amateur painter and sailor who showed him his collection of paintings by a relative, the 19th/20th C artist William Frederick Mitchell.

As a keen sailor himself, Ron decided to specialize in portraying classic yachts in modern regattas. Ron met the renowned marine painter J Steven Dews who was kind enough to give him hints and tips on colour choice and composition.

After completing his PhD, Ron taught the history of art both in the UK and USA. However, he soon decided to take up painting professionally when his commission book grew too large to sustain two careers.
Ron has exhibited around the world and at the RSMA annual exhibition. He is invited each year to submit work for sale At the international auction house Christies, where his prices have continued to rise. Jane Turner, head of maritime art at Christies said of his work, 'Ron is one of the more compelling artists of the day, his meticulous attention to detail and sense of realism shows he has an affinity with the sea'.
Ron had the honour of being the official artist for Panerai, the official sponsor of the international classic yacht circuit.
